Abacus Leadership

President & CEO

During his years as President, Jeff Sikora has overseen the company's development from a single focused voluntary sales organization into an underwriting and marketing organization that works with Insurance Carriers who are looking to enter the voluntary market, but lack the expertise and focus necessary to succeed. Some of these companies have included Professional Insurance Corporation, Medical Life Insurance (now Dearborn National) Baltimore Life Insurance Company, Fortis Benefits (Now, Assurant Employee Benefits) and most recently Kansas City Life Insurance Company. ABACUS has also been instrumental in developing specialty plans and rates for large corporations such as Hyatt Corp and TSA.

By continually monitoring the direction of the industry, and pricing benefits for profitable business relationships, Mr. Sikora's vision continues to drive the company to be an accessible and progressive provider to our clients and partners through the latest and most cost effective technology.

Mr. Sikora graduated from the University of Chattanooga and is a member of the NAIFA and NAHU. He and his wife of 39 years, Judi, have three children and five grandchildren, and reside in Santa Rosa Beach, Florida.


Senior VP Sales / Technology

Hal Denton is the Senior VP of Sales and Technology, as well as a founding partner of The Abacus Group. During his tenure with ABACUS, Hal has assisted companies like Professional Insurance Corporation, Medical Life Insurance Company, Baltimore Life Insurance Company, Union Security Insurance Company and Kansas City Life Insurance Company, develop worksite products and strategies for broker driven distribution. ABACUS has brought these companies to the markets using both individual guaranteed renewable products as well as group-based products.

With over 25 years of experience in the voluntary employee benefits market, Mr. Denton understands voluntary products from concept, through employer sale, employee sale, claims and back to re-enrollment. These insights help our partners maintain a group persistency of over 95% and insure that all parties receive the expected results.

Hal also understands that technology influences every part of the insurance experience from the initial sales through the claim process. ABACUS has developed programs that allow the policyholder to see, in real time, the effects of policy language changes in the policy pricing models. Mr. Denton believes that whether the customer is price driven or benefit driven, the information must be simple to understand, simple to communicate, and simple to administrate. Technology should just work, and not be another step in the process for the agent, the employer, or the insured.

By focusing on the future, Mr. Denton knows that technology will drive pricing down, simplify sales and enrollments, and boost profitability. Therefore, his goal is to keep ABACUS on the cutting edge. Whether they are working with HR administration systems, laptop, iPad, or telephone enrollments, or even transferring information through paperless spreadsheet programs; ABACUS will be ready.

Mr. Denton graduated from Jacksonville University and is a member of NAHU. He and his wife of 28 years, Susan, have three children and reside in Knoxville, Tennessee.


Abacus Timeline of Success

The following is a timeline of the company's success.


The formation of Sikora/Pettit Inc. The vision: to specialize in the sale of supplemental products in the workplace to schools and municipalities through the general agents hierarchy system.


Sikora/Pettit signs an exclusive, but independent, contract to market products in GA, SC, and AL for Professional Insurance Corporation.


Sikora/Pettit is awarded a contract from the State of Georgia to develop and market a "State Gap Plan" to be sold in conjunction with the state's new major medical merit system health insurance.


Sikora/Pettit develops a marketing strategy to implement the new Section 125 laws. This new offering opened the Group Employer market to Sikora/Pettit.


Sikora/Pettit, working with Mercer-Meminger, develops Short Term Disability, Cancer, and Hospital Indemnity plans; introducing, for the first time, a chassis approach to benefit building and pricing versus the traditional fixed benefit filing approach.


Sikora/Pettit opens its first administration office with underwriting and pricing authority.


Sikora/Pettit ends its exclusive contract with Professional Insurance Corporation and incorporates as The ABACUS Group. Hal Denton merges his company, Mid-Atlantic Region Inc, with Sikora/Pettit to expand distribution and build a first class organization. This expansion provides increased marketplace and brings the technology component to ABACUS.

The ABACUS Group signs a contract with Medical Life Insurance to develop voluntary products and a marketing plan for their independent brokers throughout the southeast.


The ABACUS Group signs a contract with Towers Perrin Consultant Group to develop a long-range marketing plan and relationships with "key" reinsurance carriers. This gives ABACUS the financial resources to compete in the larger group market.


The ABACUS Group is contracted by Baltimore Life to develop a worksite-marketing plan; which would include policy pricing, outsourcing administration and reinsuring the risk. Working with Towers Perrin, existing Voluntary STD, LTD and Life plans are re-priced and contracts are signed with ASI for administration and Fortis/DRMS for reinsurance.


The ABACUS Group expands its marketplace offerings nationwide.


The ABACUS Group contracts with Fortis Benefits to develop a marketing plan to develop a voluntary offering of STD, LTD and Life to the marketplace. Contracts are put in place with ASI and Fortis to issue and administer contracts on Union Security paper, a subsidiary of Fortis.


The ABACUS Group contracts with Kansas City Life to develop a marketing plan for voluntary STD, LTD and Life to the marketplace. Contracts are put in place to outsource administration to NABCO, with the risk reinsured by Hartford Group Reinsurance Partners.


The ABACUS Group develops an "online" enrollment system and an electronic transfer program for paperless enrollment.


The ABACUS Group contracts with AIG to work with their Neptune, NJ reinsurance division to develop a group Critical Illness plan.

The ABACUS Group negotiates with Sun Life to transition a block of Professional Insurance Corporation policies to Kansas City Life paper. The coverages not only include STD, but also Cancer Insurance and Hospital Indemnity Insurance.


The ABACUS Group develops a quote engine which allows brokers to expedite adjusting rates, benefits, and commissions to initial quotes to meet their clients' needs. The ABACUS Group develops a QR (quick response) code and a smartphone app allowing agents to obtain a quote or other information on their mobile devices.


The ABACUS Group signs contracts with several of the leading HR administration systems to become an approved vendor.


The ABACUS Group signs a contract with Guy Carpenter, a Marsh Company, for additional risk management consultation.


The ABACUS Group signs a contract with Madison National Life Insurance Company for "large group" outlets.


The ABACUS Group signs a contract with 5Star Life Insurance Company for a "Permanent Life" outlet.


IHC Specialty Benefits, the specialty health marketing and distribution arm of The IHC Group, acquires a minority interest in The ABACUS Group. This not only expands IHC’s distribution channel, it also increases Abacus’ range of voluntary benefit products in the marketplace utilizing Madison National Life’s broad portfolio in the employer group market.
